Avengers Forever's latest recruit is none other than Carol Danvers, but this Captain Marvel comes from a very different, twisted Earth.

Marvel is introducing a new, beaten down variant of Captain Marvel in Avengers Forever.

A preview for writer Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder's Avengers Forever #9 shows a never-before-seen version of Carol Danvers, who dreams of her heroic variants across the Multiverse. This Carol is a prisoner on an Earth populated with animal-human hybrids, and is seen disheveled and covered in mud with a large steel ball and chain attached to her neck by a thick, metal collar. She stands ankle deep in mud along the banks of a river, working alongside several other prisoners while their finely-dressed masters fire muskets into the air and shout towards their captives.

Also shown in the preview is a version of Captain Marvel hijacking a Hydra blimp, throwing one of the crew overboard and knocking out the rest. Readers also see a prehistoric version of Carol riding a massive pterosaur and wearing a primitive shawl. Another is seen in her fighter pilot's uniform, until the familiar superhero version of her finally appears to soar through the air in her iconic costume. The prisoner Carol explains that these are visions she experiences from different realities telling her that she's meant to fly, but on her Earth, "nothing good is allowed to fly."

A number is not given for which Earth this is in the Marvel Multiverse, nor an answer for how Carol came to be a prisoner. Avengers Forever has explored several other alternate realities and introduced variants of other Marvel favorites before. For instance, the title has showcased multiple variants of Steve Rogers/Captain America, a Tony Stark who became Ant-Man as opposed to Iron Man and more.

Avengers Forever follows a version of the iconic team cobbled together from various Earths from across the Multiverse. The ensemble is assembling to take on the Multiversal Masters of Evil, who have rampaged across Earths and conquered them. This upcoming issue teases a team-up between the imprisoned Carol Danvers and Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider, aka the All-Rider from Earth-616, who has been leading Avengers Forever alongside the Invincible Ant-Man and a Deathlok soldier.

Avengers Forever #9 is written by Aaron with interior art by Kuder, Cam Smith and Guru-eFX and letters by VC's Cory Petit. Main cover art for the issue is done by Kuder and Jason Keith, with variant cover artwork contributed to by Chase Conley and Leonardo Romero. The issue goes on sale Sep. 21 from Marvel Comics.
