The annual battle of Covington at Jack Salter Stadium turned out to be a one-sided celebration for the home team.

The Little Brown Jug is staying with Covington High after the Lions rolled over St. Paul’s 37-14 Friday night to remain unbeaten in District 6-5A.

It was the David Harris show for the Lions.

Harris rushed for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Covington controlled the line-of-scrimmage throughout, rushing for 434 yards.

Harris scored on runs of three and 56 yards.

Quarterback Brandon Coakley raced 74 yards for a touchdown and Brice Blackwell scored on a two-yard run for Covington.

Coakley added a key interception on defense to halt a St. Paul’s scoring opportunity in the red zone.

St. Paul’s took an early 7-0 lead, scoring on its first possession on a two-yard run by Jacob Davies before Covington left no doubt as to who would win, scoring 30 unanswered points in a dominating performance.

Sophomore quarterback Brennan Keim hid Jeb Reina on a 55-yard touchdown pass to account for the other score for St. Paul’s.

Speaking on Ken Trahan’s Original Prep Football Report Friday night, Covington coach Greg Salter said his team did a great job on not getting caught in the hype surrounding the rivalry.

“Our focus was strictly focused on going 3-0,” Salter said. “We let the community have fun with the rivalry part. That was the only objective. I thought our kids did a great job blocking out all that noise. We played hard for 48 minutes and couldn’t be more pleased.”

While the Covington offense has been outstanding, the Lions defense is roaring.

“Our defense has been great,” Salter said. “They didn’t give up a touchdown in the first two district games. They hit us hard, running right at us on the opening drive. Give them credit but give our defense credit for responding after that and playing well, playing their butts off the rest of the way.”

Playing at the stadium bearing the name of his legendary grandfather and former Covington coach Jack Salter, the grandson has embraced the style and philosophy of the Hall of Fame coach.

“My grandfather always said if you run the ball well and stop the run, you win,” Salter said. “We did that tonight and we are doing it. We have outstanding backs a good defense.”

Covington (5-1, 3-0) travels to Hammond while St. Paul’s (2-4, 1-2) will host Northshore next Friday night.
