Wii Sports Is Reborn As 'Nintendo Switch Sports' - Nintendo Life

2022-05-29 05:51:02 By : Mr. JAMES LIU

Wii Sports is being revived for Switch as Nintendo Switch Sports, and it's coming out in April.

The new game will include Tennis, Bowling, Chambara, Soccer, Badminton and Volleyball, with Golf being added via a software update in the Fall. An update enabling Joy-Con leg-strap accessory functionality with Soccer is also scheduled earlier, in the Summer.

Online and local multiplayer will be included, and while you can use unique characters, classic Miis do seem to be supported, too.

Nintendo Switch Sports arrives on 29th April, 2022, but an online playtest will take place between 18th and 20th February.

Swing, kick and spike your way to victory with a collection of sports that puts you right into the action! Play together in person*** or online* with family and friends, or challenge friendly competitors near and far in the new iteration of the classic Wii Sports series. Turn your real-world actions into in-game movements using Joy-Con controllers and compete in six sports, including Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay). You can even use a Joy-Con with the Leg Strap accessory included in the physical version to kick the ball in a Soccer Shoot-Out! Plus, a seventh sport is planned to be added via a free update this fall – get ready to Golf! Get active and get into the game when Nintendo Switch Sports launches on April 29! Pre-orders begin today in Nintendo eShop. An online play test will also be available for Nintendo Switch Online members on Feb. 18, Feb. 19 and Feb. 20.

Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded.

It's not what we wanted, but what we needed.

I like the idea but why don't Nintendo wait until it's complete for release? What about that Nintendo that used to release full games?

Thank you, thats all I have to say, thank you for bringing back one of my favorite series that got me into gaming.

While I would have preferred a remaster of Wii Sports Resorts because I felt the games were more interesting I understand why they made this one instead, these are the most popular, they were iconic with the Wii.

Looks ok. Looks I don’t know

No Boxing on it = Crime ! 😤 I will never want to play soccer on it.

I'll get it so the family can play a few sports, definitely bowling.

Something about this feels wrong, like a Wii Sports imitator, not a Nintendo-made Wii Sports.

Unfinished at launch and a stupid title. And where are my Mii homies at? These new avatars look so generic (typical of what one would expect from Nintendo's imitators).

This should have been called Mii Sports so that they could continue using the brand well into the future rather than naming each entry after the console.

This seems cool, but I almost feel like tennis, badminton, volleyball and to lesser extent football will all just play the same. Also the Miis do NOT look like Miis

It’s probably going to be great. It’s interesting golf will come back as (free) dlc, I wonder if boxing, tennis, and baseball have any shot of doing similar.

Looks solid. I'll pick it up. I've been losing weight and this should help me some more.

Waste of time, remember it won’t even controller as good as Wii sports especially when you add the Wii sports nothing plus device. We have been there seen it done it all before.

While I'm excited for online play with these games, at this point I just want to move on from motion control games altogether.

Why do the characters look like Ninjala knock offs, what did the Miis even do to deserve this

@RupeeClock Seems like it's because of the characters - that's really the only thing that's kinda throwing me off. Hopefully we'll get Mii support.

Honestly stoked. If the normal Mii heads are usable from the start I’m sold! Hoping this precedes a Resort successor…or even just builds up to one via the DLC

I definitely would have preferred a new Wii Sports Resort, especially for the water sports

@Dezzy70 Just because you don't like this type of game doesn't make it a waste of time, not everything has to be for you.

Somehow they managed to make it look a lot less interesting than the original which came out 15 years ago. I just don't like it at all. And what the hell are those avatars? Why not just bring the Miis back?

Are they dropping the whole Mii thing or something? You'd think Miis would be a given.

Nintendo, pack this in with the Switch like with the Wii.

Don't worry, miis are still a thing. Check the volleyball video.

How is this an upgrade over the original? The characters just don't look anywhere near as charming as the miis, and it is lacking all the personality of something like Wii Sports Resort, with way less sports. Don't really get it.

In a funny twist, it looks somewhat like Xbox's Kinect Sports. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how it plays...

You can still use miis, games a 10/10

@RupeeClock Those new character designs, but you can play as Miis

@Captain_Toad Id bet the game is free

Koyzumi and Takahashi used Miis, right? So Mii support seems to be confimed? I don't think they would make custom characters just for this Direct.

Switch should have launched with this.

The game is prolly free, which would explain the lack of sports

Someone get the PS2 a drink. Switch isn't stopping this year or next.

On the second look, the Miis do look weird. But I'm still super stoked for this. It was the one thing I posted in all "what are your dream games?" articles.

(Now we just need Switch Party and a new Heaven Fever game)

Interested only in Tennis and Bowling, I wish Wii U Club Sports was more successful, I got it recently and not even one player online, not a single day! And it plays so much better with Motion Plus than the original. I hope this is 40€ and not 60.

Nintendo quietly put them out to rest and now we have what looks like a Xbox kinect avatars.

@Troll_Decimator Come on had a switch since day one The best years were the first two years Since then it’s remake, remaster, rehash, old game, cash cow of a console. Let’s hope the final 6 months of the year are better. Even the Mario kart add on tracks look so like the ones we already have.

Been waiting for this for ages, the game looks very good, thought for a second there was no golf, but it's coming later, one of the best directs ever......

Thought the new characters looked great and was hoping for updated customization. Then the Miis show up when they demoed it, and the weaknesses of the Mii designs make them seem dated and odd looking now in comparison.

I’m in, though. It has been a long time and my family is ready

Been wanting this to be true for a while didn’t think it would happen! Baseball and maybe some Of the other great sports they’ve had would be good additions later on. The mii’s look interesting to say the least but the ones the guys played as in the presentation looked more like mii’s. Fantastic direct!

@ShreyasPFSVK @OnlyItsMeReid The non-Mii characters are definitely a big thing here, but there's something more to it I can't put my finger on.

Miis were a Wii thing. Now introducing: Smitches.

I can't believe this is real. I've been interested in Wii Sports for a while, so now that this exists I can finally play at least a version of it! I am VERY excited for this.

I have some questions though...

1. Why is golf coming later - wasn't that in the original at launch?

2. Will this come with the Switch later on, or be free-to-play?

3. Why aren't Miis the main avatars

I wish there were actual Miis. Geez, Nintendo, they're built in to the system! More complex is not always better, the Miis were great. Also, where's boxing?

This may sound critical but I'm really excited.

The sports game that I still like the most on the Switch is “Go Vacation”.. One of the things that I enjoyed the most was the exploration / free roam side of things - including finding those animals to photograph, riding on horses, skiing around the slopes.. would like to see that implemented in more sporting games, as long as it is done well.

@Dezzy70 The first year was the best because they were stacking releases that would be on Wii U to launch the console all guns blazing. Either way, I've had a lot of fun with my Switch for 5 years, if you only care for Mario and Zelda that's your own problem. I loved the Direct.

@RupeeClock For one its in 1080p and the graphics all have this glossy look to them, the new location looks like it could be in splatoon more than a wii sports sucsessor

By the looks of it, you will need ring fit accessories to make the most out of it

Mixed hype. The emphasis on motions controls concerns me for the millions of switch lite owners.

@Troll_Decimator That’s cool you like the games as that is what is good for you. Correct I mainly have switch for the big AAA, Mario Odyssey, BOTW, Luigi Mansion, Mario Kart, Yoshi was good, Metroid 4 if and when, Mario 2d platformer, DK 3d game. The list goes on but not on the Switch since the first two years really. Thank god we have some big AAA on the PS5 this year.

Nintendo Direct once again put MS/Sony to school.. just abnormal pace, and with almost all announcements being big hitters. Switch Sports definitely put a smile on my face, I'm getting this game!

@Dezzy70 If you care about AAA games mainly then Switch is not for you. The sooner you understand this, the better. I'm just saving you the trouble and disappointment.

Now this is some good news.

@Dezzy70 Joycons (and the Pro controller) have great motion sensing capabilities, easily just as good as the Wii's, see ARMS or Splatoon 2. It doesn't have pointer controls, but that was never important in games like Wii Sports.

No Frisbee golf? I'm out.

It looks awful.......and no baseball!

Still waiting for what we were shown for the Wii U with dual screen functionality.

@Nintendo_Thumb Yes have used the motion control on the joycons, they not as fluid and need re-centring a lot like in Pikmin remaster on switch.

@Troll_Decimator You have a good point, but the Switch has some of the best AAA games around, they are just old and about 4 to 5 years old now, BOTW, Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart for example. They just have stopped making them now and slowed down in house AAA game production. The Wii had Galaxy 1 and 2 within three years of each other, that was amazing. Hoping BOTW2 will be 2022 and a surprise NEW DK or Mario platform game 2022. I can but dream.

It's so disappointing that you still cannot move your character around in Tennis

@OnlyItsMeReid Places like Wuhu Island have the "Wii Sports" DNA that carries over to games like Mario Kart 8 just fine. It's not a matter of resolution, Wii Sports was on Wii U in 1080p as well.

@Dezzy70 AAA games take a very long time to be developed. Just look at Sony, they will have maybe a couple big hitters this year, we're looking at an average of 5 years of development. There aren't a ton of studios that make AAA games, outside super generic stuff like Ubisoft games. The capacity industry-wide is limited. Even Nintendo games are barely AAA, only Zelda and Mario really qualify. So if you only care about AAA games, you really ought to diversify and broaden your horizons a bit or you will have huge droughts; development times are only going up, not down, which means fewer big games per year. Back on N64 and SNES times, Rare sometimes even released 2 "AAA" (for the time) games in a single year.

Cool but how do you remove Baseball and add Badminton??? Strange 🤔

@Dezzy70 That's how the Wii and Wii U was. If you played Wii Sports Resort Table Tennis, or Skyward Sword on the Wii, I'm sure you'd be used to it already. Splatoon 1 & Splatoon 2 both had that issue as well, but it's never been an issue in ARMS or Ring Fit Adventure so it's clearly based on how they design the game. While that's annoying, it's not a Nintendo only problem, it's an issue on PSVR with tracking those controllers as well and lighting can mess with it easily, even PC VR has occasional motion tracking issues. If you want to play the game, you have to get used to it but hopefully it's as painless as ARMS, which in my opinion is perfect.

R.I.P. Matt. Like many of the people here, I also think that these new avatars are totally uninteresting. If they wanted to bring back the Sports series, why relegate one of its most iconic aspects to being secondary characters in game full of generic stand-ins?

Not a fan of the Mii replacements, that much is clear.

Megaton announcement. This will sell gangbusters

The Miis are still usable in game as confirmed by the volleyball demonstration.

@Troll_Decimator That’s why I have all three consoles and I pick the top AAA games for each and play the odd other games now and again. I just think Nintendo did more AAA in the Wii days like Mario galaxy 1 and 2 being 3 years apart as an example. I think it is more about cost and return on investment now than making big AAA games for Nintendo. Remember and no disrespect to Nintendo I adore their AAA games, but a Mario Odyssey 2 not should take 5 years plus as they will have the game assets and engine from the first game and lot of work already there and done. Also the games are not exactly very graphically, high texture and full of detail and 4K etc, say like a Horizon Forbidden West, which has taken 5 years and must use masses of resource and cost to produce and I think about 300 developers plus. I think Nintendo just don’t want to do it as maybe like I said the return on investment is not great and Switch is selling so well why should they bother.

@betterman Island Flyover is still one of the most enjoyable memories I have of playing games.

@Dezzy70 Wii day AAAs on Wii were much smaller in scope and requirements compared to these days, so of course they could release things more rapidly. Horizon is an entirely different thing compared to a Mario or Zelda game. First off, it's a realistic game so they don't need to create everything from scratch. There are assets you can buy/scan from the real world that saves a lot of time. Also Guerrilla has more staff than Nintendo's internal studios. Finally, and no offense meant, but Horizon is not gonna be on the same level as either Mario or Zelda. It is not going to redefine the 3D platformer or the open world genre, it's just a solid game and that's about it.

oh the meltdowns on various forums if the Switch catches the PS2, my prediction of a Switch 2 hitting late 2024 early 2025 are not all that far-fetched now.

This was one of the best announcements of the show for me, but to be honest it was one of the best directs ever, so much cool content.

Its a shame they missed out baseball and archery from resort. I loved the archery game.

A bit confused why they don't have miis since miitopia exists, but I'll join in into the online test to demo it! Idk about buying it...

Very excited to play Bowling, Tennis, Volleyball, and Golf locally and online! Just sucks Golf will be summer DLC. Nintendo (and most other developers) continuing to release unfinished games is kind of a norm now I suppose.

Clever move. 200 million Switch sales?

By NO MEANS am I saying the game is going to be bad. I'm glad this was even thought of all.

But what hurt me the most was that it wasn't Mii based, they're SIDE ADDITIONS more than anything. They flat out trolled us. Why Nintendo T^T Literally replace the Avatars with Miis and make it Mii Themed and then I'll feel better.... I can live with no Wuhu Island or Limited Mini-Games.... just make it Mii Themed..... The Switch needs more Mii Games.... Miis need some love.....

I was almost disappointed until they mentioned golf would be coming later. I hope it's reminiscent of the Resort version and not just the original. I would have to get this... as long as the price is right. That would be the strongest motivating factor for me on this one.

@everyone Cor what are you all, the mii police? I do agree there is a lack of Mii-themed support but yikes.

Miis are confirmed to be an available option in game, for those wondering.

Miis can be imported as we saw Takahashi and Koizumi's Miis when they were demoing the game.

I just saw that this game is priced at $39.99 USD wtf

I know it's been said but this will be horribly inferior to the Wii/Wii U versions. I play the hell out of those now with my kids and they LOVE them.

An HD remaster of Wii Sports Resort would have been way more fun. No Archery? No buy!

Why are we getting Ninjala Sports?

Yes, I know Miis are supported, but come on. The Miis are kinda a synonym of the Wii Sports series.

I really hope those generic avatars don't replace Miis in the future. Games like Tomodachi Life and Miitopia would probably have little to no charm with them.

@Troll_Decimator I too am glad that Nintendo publishes a wide variety of games from various genres, not just 3rd person action-adventure games with a tiny number of other types of games sprinkled in between.

This is the most Nintendo thing ever to do. The fact that they did not disclose the price makes me think that Nintendo’s about to pull another 1-2 Switch on us, sadly.

Undoubtely one of the biggest and most welcome surprises of the Direct. An excellent idea that should've flourished years ago. On a side note, this likely disconfirms the 1-2 Switch 2 rumours.

This was a pleasant surprise for me (along with the Portal games). I loved Wii Sports. My kids have been playing Wii Sports on my old Wii U and they love the tennis and bowling. So this is gonna be a treat for them

I miss the old miis but the gaming space and Nintendo have moved on. I'm just happy to have bowling. I'm about to get a bunch of friends to buy a switch (including my mother) easy.

@Banjo- I would only be disappointed if they released an incomplete game and asked you to pay extra for the rest. Fortunately, this is not the case.

The miis are still there guys they just have arms and legs now

@Dezzy70 There's a rather obvious (well, two obvious) reasons why we haven't heard about a new Mario platformer yet.

The first is that Nintendo likes to space out their releases. It has only been a year since they released SM3DW+BF, and keep in mind that they seem to pool new releases and re-releases within the same pile.

Secondly, they need to make some room for the upcoming Mario movie.

@ModdedInkling But why not wait a few months and include golf in the cartridge? I'm disappointed with that.

Much less sports than Wii Sports Resort and 3 of them are some variation of Tennis.

There's a lot of great sports in the first 2 games which would be great to play without the nunchuck cable.

While I saw that you can still have your Miis be avatars, I honestly prefer these new avatars a lot more over the Miis.

Whether or not they're not full-on replacement for Miis, they feel like a natural evolution for Nintendo avatars.

I just hope we get customization options, if possible.

I really like that they are bringing Wii Sports back to life. I just wish they would have put the home run derby and archery games in this one. I really hope those come later to the game.

@Banjo- I guess that in hindsight, the game isn't gonna work out well when Nintendo discontinues internet support on the Switch, but that is so incredibly far into the future. But it seems like all of those people who have a Switch but don't have internet are pretty much screwed

On the flipside, this is better than how Nintendo handled the release of Wii Sports Club. Pretty much the reason why nobody knows what that game is.

@anoyonmus They pulled a 1-2 Switch.

@JakedaArbok and how does it pull off a 1-2 Switch.

Because its not bundled in with the Switch.

We don't know so far. Its kinda early to tell. They could put this on the Switch OLED

@Silly_G if I'm not mistaken, when they played an exhibition volleyball game, it was with their Miis

Looks pretty cool. I wish they would’ve stuck with the Miis though. The $40 price tag makes it much better though.

@ModdedInkling If they're adding golf in summer they should have waited. I agree about Wii Sports Club, it was a downgrade, not just the release but also the gameplay. I don't know if the Switch will be able to match or surpass Wii motion plus controls with the joy-cons, to be honest. I doubt it.

@anoyonmus They pulled a 1-2 Switch by selling 6 bare-bones minigames, albeit with cool-looking motion controls and a leg strap, in a package that just doesn’t have the charm of the original. If they do package it with a Switch or Switch OLED like you said, it’ll be slightly worth it, and granted, I’ll probably buy this because my family likes sports games, but it’s not a great deal for 40 bucks. If it was 30 or even 35, I could see it, but this is 20 bucks more than Brain Age, which you could likely get much more playtime out of and is still enough for casual people to get. I just don’t see it, sadly.

I miss the Miis, but will likely get this and play it about as much as I’ve played 1-2-Switch, which I’m still waiting to play for a family party of some sort… and then Mario Party happens or Jackbox, etc. I hope this one is good. I’ll try the beta.

@Dezzy70 The Joy-Con's motion controlls are more accurate than the Wii motion plus'.

They certainly have the makings for a game that they could continue to drop dlc for. I’m a sucker so I’m sure I’ll get it. I do wish there were more games announced than just the seven.

I actually enjoyed the disc golf of Wii Sports Resort more than the regular golf.

Something is off or missing from this edition of Wii/Switch Sports. I really think they should have included all the sports from the previous 2 Wii Sports games + more for a new entry so many years later... not just 6 sports and a couple others down the line. Happens too often it seems this gen with some games seemingly being the right idea, but then too light on content.

Also, I kinda miss the Mii craze and the MiiVerse / Mii Plaza of DS & Wii era. Lots of creative creations with limited tools. And they were easier to transfer and share then. Think the Miis are something they should've integrated & expanded more on and kept it going on Switch! Glad they aren't fully forgotten. Bring those communities and the Mii Craze back! That would've added a lot more character & charm to this game.

Tbh, they probably should've just made a brand new PilotWings game! Hopefully that comes to fruition as well.

A lot of complaints about the not-Miis but it should be pretty obvious why. Wii Sports Club sold terribly, the last thing they want to do is make that again. Wii U sold bad, people here might miss the miis, but selling things with that branding just doesn't work anymore and would put people off more than anything, if history is any example.

I get wanting to fizzle out the mii/wii branding with it not really catching anyone's eye outside of hardcore fans anymore. The miis still seem to be an option so it's not like were losing options here.

The new avatars still look cute and official art shows a squirrel avatar, hinting at customizable animal characters too? Really curious to see more of this

@Banjo- I've already been left a pretty bad impression on the Switch's motion controls since 1-2 Switch, and Skyward Sword HD only confirmed my skeptics; the lack of a sensor bar leaves so many adverse effects on motion controls.

I like to coin this new term, called "gyro drift," because you no longer have precision and keeping the controller still might still move the camera. The technology hasn't advanced contrary to popular belief; it has moved backwards.

@Nintendo_Thumb With Wii Sports Club's case, I highly doubt the failure of brand recognition had to do with anything involving its own failure. It had more to do with being an aftereffect of the Wii U's failure, and poor marketing and distribution.

The fact that it wasn't a launch title for the Wii U, being given through trials and increments before the final game, was already more than the reason for why it flopped. No one knew the game existed because Nintendo barely told anyone, period. If they talked a lot about it and people still didn't buy it, then that certainly means brand recognition failed.

Brand recognition wouldn't have an effect on it regardless if the console itself was good or bad. Presentation is what matters, which is how Splatoon gained so much success because of its huge marketing.

@wuntyme8 Correction: 3 previous Wii Sports games.

@BTB20 That's not true...the lack of a sensor bar is the main culprit in this.

@JakedaArbok Wii Sports Club: "First time?"

@kalosn Maybe this IS the 1-2 Switch 2 rumours. I would imagine there's always one "gimmicky" game thrown into the mix within the same category.

@ModdedInkling Maybe it is! Either that, or the leakers simply overcoated this surprising announcement with something that people would react with strangeness.

Hmmm... I just might have get this what with Wii Sports being one of the few games my wife is interested in playing, but also with what my Wii being broken.

@somnambulance the mii's are there. The presenters used Mii characters when doing the volleyball demonstration

Looks just as I imagined it would, although those dodgy direct streams did not do any game revealed any favors last night, I when's straight to the official websites and watched the individual trailers in much better quality.

But the games look perfect to me, and like the sports village look to them, pretty sure they will be awesome in the flesh as it were.

Depends what they do with their next console, if the Switch 2 another hybrid with more power, pretty sure most stuff will just simply move across if you still want it.

Most of the 103 million Switch owners would not have seen this before, and football, volleyball and badminton are all brand new, the game will sell very well no matter how how many people moan on forums, always the case.

@Dezzy70 Why won't it control the same? Arms motion controls play far better than any Wii game I played.

The Switch could sell another 60 million or so console easily, if Nintendo do not release a Switch 2 until early mid 2025, plus there has been no real price cut as yet, and you can bet there is a Lite OLED model coming at some point, the only issue Nintendo have is making enough consoles.

Yes of course they should have revealed a new Pilotwings, the game sold around a million copies on the N64, and was a launch title, then did not even sell a million copies in the 3DS.

I would love a new game but it's pretty easy to see why it's very low on Nintendo's list of priorities.

My Dream came true. I can´t believe it. YEAHHHHH!!!

Must admit to shouting "Yes" very loudly last night, so excited for this.

Gonna have to get an alternate TV set just for this game because I am NOT going to risk breaking my OLED when the joycon inevitably goes flying lol.

Can't wait for this game to drop.

@Banjo- >nintendo don't goes with time >oh wow nintendo is so stubborn >nintendo goes with time >what happened to old nintendo? There is no winning move

I remember when fifa 08 came out and we joked the wii remote would get a leg strap.

Looks like its finally happening.

@Dezzy70 there may not me anything for you but there is far more I'm excited for on Switch then on the PS5 at the moment. This may be a rehash but Wii Sports was great fun and I'm looking forward to playing this game, Mario Strikers looks fun as does Kirby and then Xenoblade to top it off. If they're not for you then fair enough but I'll be having a great time with Switch this year

They should of course have called it MiiSports, but still quite happy.. almost thought about buy wii sports club on the wiiu recently to get some easy fix

will the legstrap from ring fit will be ok? i guess so.

@ModdedInkling it's value proposition just didn't make sense with the sports being rented etc... got the WiiU late, thought about getting this somewhere just the line but never was in a sale,... and not sure i i would 'rent a sport'for a month when i would play.

@RupeeClock Sword-play will will be inferior with the joy-cons vs the Wii remote plus. And i can't see bowling working quite as well either. Anything that requires a flick or waggle should be fine, but 1:1 smooth moving pointer aiming/etc will be compromised heavily with the joy-cons, unless losing accuracy and having to constantly press a realignment button is your thing.

With that said, i'm still pretty excited for this. Must be that Wii nostalgia!

@ModdedInkling I agree! The pointer of the Wii Remote was perfect for shooters but I'm really surprised to see that even motion that doesn't rely on the pointer was so good in the Wii's first game (Wii Sports) and that Nintendo has gone backwards since. Motion Plus was almost 1:1, you can see it while holding the sword in Skyward Sword on Wii and the calibration was not frequent nor obstructive.

I'm not a fan of shoehorned motion controls or when they interfere with regular controls making gameplay frustrating and clunky. For instance, Super Mario Galaxy. I don't mean collecting star bits but swinging while in the air to move platforms. Anyway, Wii did motion controls much better than Switch and in 2022 still is the best platform for playing (Nintendo) Sports.

@glaemay So releasing uncompleted games is "going with time" for you?

@Banjo- I hope that more people will realize this rather than thinking that "new is better"band automatically assume that Joy Cons have better motion controls.

@Nintendo_Thumb It sold bad because Nintendo gave it away for free for a limited time. I paid nothing for it on Wii U.

@ModdedInkling Exactly. Another thing they have done worse is... you, know, the sticks drift.

@romanista It was the worst marketing I've ever seen for a game.

Either way, the game itself plays alright. I would say that the only two sports that realistically received upgrades were baseball and golf.

@DABYX The motion controls in ARMS are very simplistic and doesn't require precision or accuracy. If you tried out a game like Skyward Sword, you'll immediately notice the difference in sensitivity, and how you basically can't precisely aim as well on the Switch compared to the Wii.

@Ventilator Even if they gave it away, apparently nobody downloaded it or bothered to play it. They had a trial, which is what I imagine you're talking about but the online lobbies were always near empty since launch and only got worse as time went on. And sure, the Wii U wasn't a popular system, but Mario Maker had millions of levels uploaded immediately and tons on a regular basis, 4 player Smash Bros, or 8 player Splatoon matches or 12 player Mario Kart matches were always just a few seconds away, practically any time of day.

Wii Sports Club just wasn't popular and the Wii branding turned people off. Maybe things have changed since then, but as I recall any mention of the word Wii meant to a certain demographic of the gaming population to mean it was shovelware gimmicky garbage uncomparable to the big HD-twins. So when Wii U came out us Nintendo fans went gaga, while the Xbros of the world called it a baby console for second rate games, and isn't even a console, sounds like a Wii add-on, that's what people said. Nintendo doesn't want anything to do with that, that's why they called it The Switch, rather than the Wii U 2, or Wii 3. I always thought it was a load of bull, but the stigma remains.

@Silly_G Hit the nail on the head there mate!! Totally agree. You should work for Nintendo Marketing haha

@ModdedInkling In a ton of games the precision of the gyro aiming is as good as perfect. It's like Wii motion plus but better. Wii motion plus didn't need the sensor bar either.

@Nintendo_Thumb Yeah. Wii U did at least get loads of top exclusives, and many third parties did a good effort on the touch pad. Wii U also had much more features than Switch.

It were stupid to not transfer the Mario Maker levels to Switch version. When Sony closed the Little Big Planet 1+2 servers, they transfered millions of levels to LBP 3 on PS3/PS4. Kinda of weird since Sony don't care much if they can't charge money for it, but they did.

Anyway. GameCube were also called a baby console because of the purple color and the handle.

@BTB20 The Wii Motion Plus utilized the sensor bar to "soft-calibrate" itself every now and then. In Wii Sports Club, there was even an option to turn off or on the sensor bar.

I don't know what games you were playing, but I never found the Switch's motion controls to be as accurate as the Wii's. Some games use motion controls in a different way, so the only games worth comparing are the ones on both the Wii and the Switch.

@countzero I didn't notice that! That's great! If I get this I'll definitely use my Mii.

@Ventilator That would have been impossible to just move the levels to the sequel, the physics are different. Levels designed around a magnetic flag pole ball, mystery mushroom costume 1 block height duck swimming, Weird Mario, true random rather than button based random, entering overlapping pipes, p-switch timing, breaking bricks by walking into them with giant mario, whether it's okay to walk on a platform overlapping spikes or if you can jump over the screen if there are spikes up there, there are a lot of little changes between the two that it would break a lot of levels making them impossible to pass with the new rules. I guess they could have made it a double pack and included Super Mario Maker 1 + Super Mario Maker 2, but anyone playing random top rated levels would constantly be confused about what the rules were.

A lot of people here have low standards. The game is obviously incomplete because they have so few sports and they look identical almost gameplay wise: badminton, tennis, volleyball.

They even don't have golf on launch.. where is baseball, boxing, piloting a plane? Obviously it's because of the online support that they have to have so few sports because doing online means you can't have a lot going on onscreen or can't have sports which requires fast paced action which is why boxing in Wii sports club is slow and awful.

@ModdedInkling Like I said, games with gyro aim. If done right it's more accurate than anything on the Wii. I also found Skyward Sword HD's controlls to mostly be more precise. Only the spin attack was harder to pull of than in the original. I don't get why you think it's less accurate.

@ModdedInkling oh well guess I'm just not as knowledgeable. I do have skyward but never on the Wii. I just thought for what it does, the joycons would be good for it.

YES!!!! Fantastic news and, believe it or not, my favorite announcement of the Direct. I'm a huge fan of the Wii Sports series, especially Resort, and have been hoping it'd make its way to Switch. Took longer than I thought it might but super hyped that it's happening. Only disappointment is no basketball but hopefully there will be future updates beyond the fall where it can be added.

Stuff like this is why the Switch is already one of my favorite systems of all time. I know a lot of people don't look back fondly on it now but I still think the Wii is an awesome console and the Switch is the follow up I had hoped the Wii U would be and more.

@Nintendo_Thumb They could have allowed you to download your own Wii U levels at least and modify them for MM 2.

When they shutted down MM 1 server on Wii U, i recorded all my own levels with Elgato first. I also downloaded all event levels which had new characters. Then i did a backup of everything on Wii U to HDD on PC, so i can't lose any of my levels and event levels.

As for Mario Maker 2. I barely touched it ever since i bought it over 2 years ago. I bought the Switch Stylus too, but still never made a level.

@BTB20 Allow me to introduce you to "gyro drift" which I found to be a very prominent issue in Skyward Sword HD. Because of the sensor bar's hidden functionality on the Wii version, you're able to take very steady shots. On the Switch, there are instances where trying to do so will cause the camera to constantly move in a certain direction, almost in the same manner as stick drift.

What the sensor bar on the Wii does is it continues to "soft-calibrate" (for lack of a better term) whenever you point the Wiimote Plus towards the screen. It ensures that you can accurately point to the screen while shutting out any subtle movements from the gyroscope if it does not match up with the sensor bar. Effectively, this also means less normal recalibration.

I'm interested but I wish it had more Miis. I don't care for the new character look

@RupeeClock Could be the lack of Mii's and charisma, as well as the feeling of being "plain" in some areas

@ModdedInkling I like you because you give really nice and thorough explanations of things

@Captain_Toad Nintendo had like over 20 games that could easily be packed-in with Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED nowadays that I'm still surprise they hadn't already done it. Games like Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Clubhouse Games 51-in-1, Splatoon 2, 1-2 Switch, Ring Fit Adventures, Super Mario Maker 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Pokken Tournament, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, ARMS, Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battles, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Tetris Effects Connected, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Captain Toad: Definitive Edition, Luigi's Mansion 3, Astral Chain, etc., any one, two or three of those games bundle with any of those system with a one year free trial of NSO Expansion Pack for around $170-$300 would be a major seller for Nintendo.

Now that we know miis are back, i can safely say, THIS IS AMAZING! my childhood memories are flooding back!

I'll dive in when Golf is inside. Not before.

@Edwirichuu Thank you, though it doesn't necessarily happen all the time. Sometimes, I leave pretty short messages and end up sparking some bad debate.

@Ventilator That's cool you backed everything up but you were slightly mistaken, as the servers were never shut down (they removed the ability to upload, star levels, and removed bookmark functionality). If you boot up the game on the Wii U, you can still play those millions of levels, as well as all of the event courses. I would hope that they somehow preserve them if and when they do eventually shut down the servers, I've been saying it since the Switch came out, but they should port Mario Maker 1 to the Switch and then they don't need to keep the servers running just for the few Wii U players still out there.

And, anyways I've only made a few levels myself for Mario Maker 2, but play it constantly, Maker is in the name, but it's just millions of great levels for Mario fans to play through. You don't need to make anything to enjoy the game, but, if you bought it and didn't play it, that's your own fault not the games. The game is great, but if it's not your thing, you probably shouldn't have bought it, you really should have known what you were getting into just based on the name alone. Sometimes I'll throw a few bucks away on a gamble hoping a game is good, but for $60 if it's a genre I don't like, I wouldn't spend that kind of money without at least a very convincing demo. I thought it was pretty clear what kind of game it was before I bought it, but were you expecting something else?

It appears that, like super mario party, this game will not support handheld mode, and only supports joycons.

I can't be the only person thinking that Curling would be a perfect addition to this with motion control to set weight, spin and sweep.

its nice to see that they brought Wii Sports over to the Nintendo Switch. hopefully soon they will bring over the Wii Fit franchise as well...

@Nintendo_Thumb Ahh. I thought everything went offline. They should preserve the levels, but someone already did that. I read somewhere that all levels exist offline, but you need a modded Wii U to play them.

Yeah, these Mario Maker games already have more levels than you will ever play. I like Mario platformers, but i forgot to play them on Switch. On Wii U i played a lot.

Since i made a bunch of levels on Wii U, isn't it clear that i knew what i were buying?. Doesn't look like you read my whole post before replying as it clearly stated i knew what Maker was..

I made different kind of levels. Titanic, Bruce Lee Remake, Bomb Jack Remake etc.

Lol, those are not Mii. Looks more like Kinect sports, with the Avatars.

The new "Miis" Look like they came from Ninjala.

@Banjo- Players have been waiting for this for way too long, it was time they announced it especially after the Switch surpassing Wii sales. And since they announced it, I guess they didn't want to make us wait too long(??) Honestly I have no idea.

@stevenw45 I think ring fit is all we may get..
