Toshiba Materials has recently announced a major investment in a new silicon nitride balls manufacturing facility at the same location as its headquarters in Yokohama, Japan.

With a budget that exceeds approximately $38 million, the project is expected to commence production in November 2023 to escalate the production capacity by 50% against the fiscal year 2021.

Toshiba Material’s recent investment comes at a time when the industry is experiencing an enormous surge in the demand for bearings in electric vehicles. The new production unit will be constructed on an existing company site after demolishing the abandoned building that currently sits on the headquarter site.

Essentially, the new facility marks the first step into Toshiba Material’s expansion strategy, with further expansion ventures lined up to address the future rise in demand.

For a long time now, Toshiba Group is betting on the potential of fine ceramic products and secured basic patents for the silicon nitride compounds back in 1974.  Toshiba Materials is now focused on advancing the R&D capabilities and manufacturing of silicon nitride balls, with popular traits including high reliability to ensure superior mechanical performance to all the silicon balls. Apparently, the company spun off from Toshiba in October 2003.

Owing to its long-standing experience and record success in bearing balls capable of meeting industry demand for highspeed rotation and anti-electrolytic corrosion in rolling stock, wind power generators, and machine tools, Toshiba Materials has acquired over 50% of the global market.
